Artist Statement
I’m Nikol Penova, a design researcher dedicated to utilising my diverse skills in writing, analysis, making, and designing to create impactful and empowering solutions for women’s health and wellbeing. Born and raised in Bulgaria and growing up in Newcastle, I bring a unique blend of cultural heritage and modern expertise to my work.
I hold a BA in Film Studies where I developed a deep understanding of film analysis and literature. Films have a significant impact on our society. Cinema not only gives us a window to the social sciences but also has the power to influence attitudes, behaviour and cultural patterns.
After university, I worked in fully ethical and sustainable environments, which rekindled my passion for knitting and design - an interest rooted in the traditions of my home country and inspired by my grandmother's hand knitting. During the pandemic, I earned a certification in Fashion and Sustainability from Kering, merging my love for knitting with sustainable practices and transforming it into a powerful communication tool.
Recently, I completed an MA in Fashion Futures at the London College of Fashion, where I honed my analytical and evaluative skills. This advanced education has equipped me with a critical understanding of contemporary theories and practices in fashion and knitwear.
Key Skills and Expertise
My skillset lies in hand and domestic knitting, with my most recent work focusing on advocacy for female health using knit as a tool for communication. My research is centred on female hormone health, particularly the Luteal Phase of the Menstrual Cycle. I am strongly committed to addressing the stigma surrounding these topics and raising awareness about often misunderstood aspects of the menstrual cycle, such as the Premenstruum. This commitment drives my desire to expand my knowledge and skills further in this field.
My Approach
Proactive, organised, and detail-oriented, I approach design with a critical eye for aesthetics. My multidisciplinary skills enable me to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and contribute to the development of vibrant communities of practice. Embracing rapid change, I maintain an open mind, continuously seeking new perspectives to expand and refine my knowledge and design practices.
Goals and Aspirations
My goal is to leverage my skills in research and design to challenge societal stigmas and advance understanding of female health issues. I am excited to use methodological approaches to engage with real women, interrogate misconceptions, and foster informed dialogue. Through my work, I aim to empower women by creating insightful and impactful research that reshapes perceptions and promotes greater inclusivity and support.
